Cruising at a depth of 8,336 meters (over 27,000 feet) just above the seabed, a young snailfish has become the deepest fish ever filmed by scientists during a probe into the abyss of the northern Pacific Ocean.
<p>There’s been a long-held stereotype when it comes to <a href="https://www.refinery29.com/en-au/australian-adhd-advice">Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)</a> that is slowly being dismantled thanks to growing conversations online. ADHD extends far beyond the image of a disruptive young boy; as more <a href="https://www.refinery29.com/en-au/adhd-diagnosis-family-genetics">women share their experiences</a>, a broader and more nuanced understanding is emerging. For a lot of women, however, <a href="https://www.refinery29.com/en-au/adhd-medication-women-titration-process-experience">ADHD</a> isn’t diagnosed until much later, often after years of symptoms being overlooked or brushed off. That delay can really shape how careers unfold, with many quietly dealing with things like issues focusing, overwhelm and self-doubt without knowing why. In Australia, getting a diagnosis isn’t always straightforward either, and there are numerous barriers that can prolong getting the right support. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, impulse control, working memory, executive functioning, and more.</p> <p>Current estimates suggest ADHD affects around <a href="https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/attention-deficit-disorder-add-or-adhd">5%</a> of Australians. Girls and women have long been undiagnosed, misdiagnosed, or dismissed, often due to not fitting that stereotypical ADHD mould and masking. Many women show more inattentive symptoms than overt hyperactivity. These signs can be missed or mistaken for personality traits such as being “sensitive” or “lazy”. For many women, an ADHD diagnosis is not the start of a problem — it is the end of years of misunderstanding. With the right support, insight and environments, ADHD traits can be harnessed effectively, and strengths can flourish. The goal is not to become someone else. It is to work with your brain, rather than against it. I recently spoke with four amazing women about their late diagnosis and the impact ADHD has had on their careers.</p> <h3><a href="https://www.instagram.com/stephclairesmith/"><strong>Steph Claire Smith</strong></a><strong>, Co-founder of Kic and co-host of KicPod (@stephclairesmith)</strong></h3> <div><figure><img src="https://www.refinery29.com/images/11981985.jpg?width=768&height=1024&fit=bounds&crop=3%3A4"></figure></div> <p>I received my diagnosis at 30 years old. I decided to look into ADHD further after chatting with Em Rusciano (who was diagnosed in her 40s) on Kicpod. I found myself relating to so much of her story and her symptoms. I’d been curious about this before, but after our chat, I looked into everything further. At the time, work was extremely busy, and I knew from speaking to friends that the process of getting a diagnosis could be really emotional and time-consuming, so I decided to park it. I’m glad I made the call to go through with an assessment. I’m always interested in understanding myself better, and the diagnosis has answered so many questions for me.</p> <p>It’s lifted a lot of internal shame and guilt around me being the way that I am. It’s also now enabled me to look into ways of managing it and hopefully bring some of the severity of symptoms down in my day-to-day life. Over the last few years, my symptoms have been more severe, which I know can be really common for women after having kids. The ones that affect my day-to-day the most would be emotional dysregulation, struggle to focus on one task or in a conversation, task avoidance and untidiness and just a constant feeling of shame around not being able to ‘fix’ some of these things. I’ve also learnt about masking, and how much energy that takes, and how I’ve been subconsciously doing that for years to fit in or be liked.</p> <p>I’m fortunate that my career is a mixture of different roles which keeps it interesting, and the overarching impact my work has on people is something I’m incredibly passionate about. However, with so many balls in the air I do feel like I’m in a constant state of overwhelm. I’ve doubted myself a lot, feeling like I’m ‘falling behind on things that should come so easily to me’ — but since the diagnosis, I’ve been a little easier on myself, knowing now why they are more challenging for me.</p> <h3><a href="https://www.instagram.com/kitiyapalaskas"><strong>Kitiya Palaskas</strong></a><strong>, Designer and artist (@kitiyapalaskas)</strong></h3> <div><figure><img src="https://www.refinery29.com/images/11981984.png?width=770&height=1024&fit=bounds&crop=385%3A512"></figure></div> <p>I was diagnosed with AuDHD about 18 months ago. For me, this wasn’t an out-of-the-blue concept. I had suspected it for quite some time, so when it was finally confirmed, I felt a great sense of validation. It explained so much about the struggles I’ve experienced in life and at work. I have long struggled with retaining focus, procrastination (linked to fear of failure), rejection sensitivity (when losing out on client jobs), perfectionism, and, most notably, burnout. For the most part, I always thought these struggles were a sign of my inadequacy as a professional artist, creative, and small business owner. I saw them as shortcomings and personality flaws that I appeared to be unable to “fix”, as these challenges kept repeating over and over. Now I understand that they were symptoms of my neurodivergence, and I wish I had known sooner, so I could have been more compassionate towards myself when they occurred.</p> <p>It’s so hard to tell if I would be further along in my career if I’d known about this sooner. I try not to dwell on that, and I think I have done remarkably well for myself despite my AuDHD. Personally, my AuDHD is heavily tied to burnout. In 2025, I experienced the most extreme burnout of my entire career while managing chronic pain and PMDD. I have had to take a really long, hard look at the structure of my business, and slow down across so many facets of it.</p> <p>My diagnosis was one of the most validating and empowering things I have experienced in my life because it allowed me to start truly designing a life that best suits me, rather than trying to fit into a box that was completely not shaped for me. I used to be so locked in to hustle-culture, the career grind, and a linear view of success. I was a chronic people pleaser and didn’t know how to advocate for myself and my needs. Since learning these transformational things about myself, I have become someone who has extremely strong boundaries, is aware of my mental and physical capacity when it comes to workload, can confidently advocate for myself and is actively designing a life and work structure that completely revolves around managing my AuDHD and caring for myself, rather than fighting against it or trying to push it down through masking. Everyone is different, and everyone’s diagnosis comes with different challenges, realisations and awareness of ourselves. It is completely possible to have a thriving career with ADHD or AuDHD. Like all the things that I had just thought I wasn’t good at or struggled with made sense, and it wasn’t a personal failing. I was battling against something I didn’t know I had, and the relief was enormous, like a weight had lifted. At work, I always joked with my team, “I’ll never remember what meeting room we’re in”, but I was actually battling a lot with overwhelm, remembering small details often felt impossible, and I would be chasing my tail to keep up and continue to appear professional. The masking to seem like I had it all together would drain me, and I felt like a fraud every time I got a promotion or recognition at work. The ADHD lens helped me understand that my brain isn’t designed to hold these things, and knowing that means I can put things in place to support me as I work through.</p> <p>I have been very lucky to end up at an organisation that allows me to be open about my ADHD, as the Head of People Experience, I get to shape the way my workplace supports everyone. When we start to think about the changes we make to accommodate neurodiversity for our colleagues, we actually realise that these are ways of working that benefit everyone! I feel like my diagnosis has helped me really step into my role with confidence. I can articulate what I need and how my brain works to others, and make it easier for everyone to connect the dots. </p> <p>I don’t see ADHD as something that holds me back, I see it as an explanation for some of the best and worst parts of me. Personally, it has given me the self-compassion to understand my internal chaos, and professionally, it has changed the ways I approach work with my capacity, explaining experiences to others and connecting with other ADHDers. I carried a lot of guilt for job-hopping, or wearing multiple hats because other people seem to be able to stick at one job and stay for many years, whereas I am so passionate about so much I don’t know how to fit it all in without moving around and switching roles. It’s something I was self-conscious about for many years, knowing it may come across as non-committal or flaky, but now I get to see it as multi-passionate. </p> <p>I am now self-employed. I think for many adhd’ers, we find ourselves working for ourselves. This can be for many reasons, but for myself and what I know of my friends’ experiences, the flexibility of self-employment is really attractive and helpful. Personally, although I can find self-motivation difficult, I feel less guilt or shame for the way I work in working for myself, knowing that I am not letting anyone down if I hyperfocus on the “wrong” task too long, and I get to follow my own lead and my passions.,</p> <p>My diagnosis allowed me to more comfortably show up in ways that make sense for me, and to advocate for myself and what I need to work well. For example, feeling comfortable asking people to put things in writing (because I know my brain is busy and might filter that piece of information out), or in the way I self-set deadlines that might not exist because I work better under that bit of pressure. We often hear that when exploring a diagnosis, “what will it change anyway, you’ve made it this long”, it changes the way you see yourself. Instead of the guilt and shame of not meeting traditional standards, you get to give yourself some compassion and understanding — and find your own path forward.</p> <div><title>DashDividers_1_500x100</title></div> <p>A diagnosis can bring mixed emotions: relief, grief, anger, validation and hope. Many women I have worked with mourn the years spent blaming themselves, while also feeling empowered to understand their brains differently. Support will look different for everyone and may include psychoeducation, therapy, coaching, workplace strategies, medication review with an appropriate prescriber, or practical environmental changes. </p> <p>An ADHD diagnosis doesn’t limit your career; it changes how you work best. With the right support, insight, and environments that play to your strengths, ADHD can be a genuine asset, bringing creativity, energy, adaptability, and big-picture thinking to the table. The colours can be neutral but the effect is wild.”</p> <h2>What is the cat eye chrome nail trend?</h2> <p>To achieve the perfect blend of cat eye and chrome, your nail artist will start with a cat eye nail by using magnetic gel polish. This creates an aura effect, which you can enhance with shiny chrome powder. “Using a translucent chrome powder, whether it’s a pearl powder or one that has a hue but still translucent, you can create so many looks,” Brady explains. “I think my favourite combo is using a silver velvet cat eye with an opal fire chrome powder because the final product resembles the outside of a bubble.</p> <h2>Can you achieve a cat eye chrome manicure at home?</h2> <p>The nail artist says doing your own cat eye chrome manicure at home is definitely attainable, and colour combinations are endless. “Once you apply your magnetic gel and topcoat, it’s important that you use a non-wipe topcoat before applying the chrome powder and rubbing it into your nail, then dust off any remaining chrome powder,” she advises. “I will sometimes seal it with a basecoat and cure that, and then go over it with a topcoat for extra durability and protection.
